Guest Speaker: Dr. David Begun

The UWO Anthro Society is welcoming Dr. David Begun from the University of Toronto on Thursday, January 28th at 5:30 PM in SSC 2257. Dr. Begun, a paleoanthropologist specializing in hominoid evolution, will be presenting his research on a Eurasian origin of the African ape lineage in his lecture "Darwin's Other Idea: Dryopithecus and the African ape and human clade."

Anthropology Mentoring Program

Back by popular demand, the Anthropology Society is resurrecting an initiative from a couple years back, of a mentoring program between graduate students and undergrads.

Graduate students are available to talk about grad school, grant applications, and essentially anything anthropology related. If you have an additional questions, please feel free to contact Ashley Patterson, the graduate representative who is running the program.

There are simply two simple steps to sign up for the program:

1 - Fill out the questionnaire about your area of interest in anthropology (this will help us to set you up with an appropriate mentor). You can access the form on google docs here. Simply save and edit it.
2 - Email your form to Ashley (apatter6@uwo.ca).

The program should be up an running soon, so don't miss out!

Anthro Pub Night and General Meeting

Just a special announcement that this week we will have our first general meeting of second term, followed by a pub night. We encourage you to all come out to the general meeting to learn more about running for an exec position next year, as well as to help us plan a trip to a secret destination for the Anthro Society! (More details will be revealed at the meeting).

Coconut Jewelry Still Available!

Coconut Jewelry Sales

Just a quick announcement about a unique gift opportunity just in time for the holidays!

The Anthropology Society will be selling coconut jewelry purchased on a recent departmental trip to Madagascar this Monday to Wednesday. The jewelry was handcrafted by L'artisant de L'ankarna. Items range from bracelets, to earrings, etc, and would be the perfect present for your mom/sister/girlfriend come holiday gift exchange.

Half of the proceeds will be sent back to the artisans in Madagascar, and the other half will be donated to the Anthropology Society's charity Habitat for Humanity: London.

Details on where and when you can check out the items are as follows:

When: Monday December 7th - Wednesday December 9th, (almost all day)
Where: Booth on 2nd floor SSC (right by the entrance, just before the stairs)
Price: ~10 dollars for a set of earrings, a bracelet, etc

Anthro Pub Night!

The term is soon drawing to an end, and the Anthropology Society has one final event of the term in store for you! Come out and relieve some end-of-term stress.

Guest Speaker THIS THURSDAY

The Anthropology Society is pleased to announce our first guest lecturer for the year, and invites you to come out and join us!

Our guest speaker will be Dr. Les Field, of the University of New Mexico. He is a well-respected sociocultural anthropologist who will be speaking on his foray into collaborative ethnography, entitled "In the Time of the Blue Thread."

The presentation will begin promptly at 4:30 pm in SSC 2257, with reception to follow at the Grad Club (around 5:45).

We are thrilled that Dr. Field will be presenting on Thursday, and we encourage all anthropology students (especially those concentrating in sociocultural anthropology!) to come out. General Meeting, Atlatl Tournament, and Pub Night

This Wednesday, October 14th, will be our first General Meeting, Atlatl Tournament, and Pub night all in one big event!

General Meeting, 4:30pm, SSC 2257
The meeting will consist of short introductions from the exec, an announcement about our charity for this year, Habitat for Humanity London, from a representative from Habitat, and elections for 3 exec positions.

The following positions are available:
2 grad reps
1 first year rep
Should you be interested in these positions please come to the meeting prepared to give a few words about why you feel you would be good for the job. Your duties would include, but are not limited to: attending exec meetings, making class announcements, and acting as liaison between students and the exec.

Atlatl Tournament, 5:00pm, Delaware Hall Field
The cost will be $2 for 2 throws, the proceeds being donated to our charity.
Prizes will be awarded to top male and female throw.

Pub Night, 6:00pm, The Grad Club
An excellent opportunity for socializing! Food will be provided.

Exec Bios

ARTHUR KLAGES
President
Arthur is in his last year of a Specialization in Anthropology. His focus is on bio-anthropology; specifically on hominids (or hominins) and primates, and anything to do with the evolution of either. He has a fondness for lemurs in particular, after spending some time chasing after them this past summer. He's also happy to talk about almost anything dealing with origin questions, and anything scientific; but please refrain from discussions of post-modernism for his own mental well-being.His most pressing questions at this time are: what fossil hominid (hominin) skull should he next add to his collection? Where should he apply to grad school? And more importantly, who would be most likely to take him! While he is fleshing out the definitive hominid (hominin) phylogenetic tree, Arthur's major goals for his administration is to leave it financially secure and ensure everyone enjoys their time in the society. And to put down any possible rebellions from other members of the executive.

ALISON DEPLONTY
VP Administration
Alison is in her 3rd year of an Honours Double Major in Anthropology and History. She has a specific interest in Latin America. She has been involved with the Anthropology Society for the last two years and hopes that this year is just as good as the last.

LINDI MASUR
VP Communications
Lindi is completing her 4th year of an Honours Specialization in Anthropology degree, and would like to pursue graduate studies in archaeology if a university would want her. She is the administrator for this blog, as well as the facebook page, and is the e-mail/poster person. Lindi works in one of the archaeology labs, and has participated in three archaeological excavations. Also, she is a student member of the OAS and CAA. Feel free to contact her if you are interested in tips about opportunities to get involved in archaeology at the undergraduate level.

ALEX HERNOULD
Academic Commissioner
Alex is in her 3rd year of an Honours Specilization in Anthropology degree with a minor in Environment and Culture. Her research interests in anthropology is mainly ecotourism. She has worked in consulting archaeology for the past 2 summers across Ontario. It is her goal this academic year to call on guests to speak that with inspire and motiviate each and every one of us, and she looks forward to meeting all of you at guest speaker events.

JANEY BURNS
Charity Commissioner
Janey is in her 3rd year at Western doing a Major in Bioarchaeology. This past summer she worked on an excavation in Armenia, and has since developed an interest in Near Middle Eastern archaeology. She hopes that the Anthro Soceity can continue to reach out to students and create an even bigger and better anthro community then we had last year.

MYURI KOMARAGIRI
Charity Commissioner
Myuri is a 2nd year Political Science and Anthropology Student who is very excited to be involved with the Anthropology Society this year. She absolutely loves anthropology and she is an anthropology represenative on the SSSC. DAVID LEVINE
4th Year Representative
David is in his 4th year of an Honors Specialization degree in Anthropology. His main focus has been sociocultural anthropology, and he hopes to attend graduate school one day in that area. He is an avid bridge and squash player and is always happy to teach new people how to play either. He can be reached at dlevine5@uwo.ca if anyone has any questions or just wants to chat. PAM-MARIE GUZZO
Second Year Representative
Pam-Marie is from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and is working towards an Honours Specialization in Anthropology. She loves cultural studies, biology and archaeology, and hasn't decided which direction to go with her Specialization yet. Her goal is to try and recruit more second year students for Anthro Society this year.

STEPHANIE MILLER
First Year Representative
Stephanie is in her first year at Western after spending two years at Lambton College. Her first year classes include all 3 introductory anthro courses, 2 earth science courses (Life of Planet Earth and Earth Rocks!), Latin and Classical Civilization. Her interests are leaning more towards a major in bio-arch and she is searching for something else to go with it as a double major program. Sometime during her studies at Western Stephanie wants to participate in a field school. Right now she is just going to try and learn many things and find her niche in the anthro world.
